OTTAWA
-- The next time you feel hungry for fried chicken you may want to think twice. Thats the message from OHC staff scientist Jerry Werther.
"We're not saying that any chicken at all will cause you a problem" Werther said at a recent health symposium. "But the massive quantities that is consumed by some traveling professionals, particularly truck drivers, can lead to some serious health issues "
Werther and his OHC staff have just completed a year long study into the effects of hormone levels in the food chain and is currently on a nation-wide tour to spread awareness of this issue.
"We started out by looking at hormones in all levels of the food chain" Werther explains "ranging from synthetics entering the water system due to industry through the effects of hormones used in factory farming to grow food animals quicker and larger."
"What we found is that factory raised chickens are often dosed with massive quantities of TGH, a synthetic growth hormone that is similar to human estrogen. This hormone is carried through the food chain, and has a cumulative effect in people that consume large quantities of the meat over an extended period of time."
The most suprising effect of this hormone is seen in truckers that spend extended periods of time on the road and eat almost exclusively at truck stop where fried chicken is a staple of the diet. Over time the hormone causes 'feminisation' side-effects on male truckers, symptoms of which include shrinking of the testes, loss of body hair and in extreme cases lactation.
It is this extreme change that has inspired Werther to hit the road with his message of warning. "When we started looking into the world of professional truck drivers I never guessed this is what I would find. We've documented over one hundred cases of male truck drivers suffering from uncontrollable lactation. This effects their self esteem, their wardrobe and their livelyhood. I just want to get the message out there: too much fried chicken causes male lactation"
